What is a Nose Job?

Preparing to Get a Nose Job

Whether you have always wanted to get a nose job for yourself, or if it is a procedure that you have recently considered, a nose job is not an extremely complicated procedure and more than 100,000 of them were completed in 2010 alone. A nose job, also known as a rhinoplasty, is the procedure to shape and mold the nose into a desired look, based on the current shape of your nose and the results you have in mind.

While most often, rhinoplasty procedures are for aesthetic and image purposes, nose jobs can also help to improve breathing through the nose if the patient is experiencing structural blockages or defects within the nose. Each rhinoplasty nose job procedure typically only lasts anywhere from one to two hours, and it is considered an outpatient procedure to easily return home after it is complete (lowering the cost of recovery and minimizing the time you may need to miss work).

There are two types of rhinoplasty procedures including an open and a closed method. Closed rhinoplasty surgeries are when the surgeon is only making incisions into the nose from within the nostrils themselves. A closed rhinoplasty is less severe and takes less time. The open rhinoplasty method of the procedure, however, includes an incision along the columella, opening up the nose entirely (which makes it easier for the plastic surgeon to reshape and mold the nose, especially in more specific and detailed procedures).

Although the rhinoplasty procedure typically takes less than a couple of hours to complete, the full results of the surgery can at times, take up to a year to entirely show a difference in the face. Once the swelling and redness subsides after the procedure (generally within one to two weeks), the patient is able to get a better look at what will be the final results.
